Held at Hameed Nee Wadi, near Karimnagar Society & Jamatkhana, Botad, the Pre-Centennial gathering was not only a celebration of the Aga Khan Hostel’s enduring legacy of learning and compassion but also a heartfelt moment of remembrance.

On behalf of the Management Committee Members and Alumni, we express our deepest condolences on the passing of Dr. Jagdish Bhagwanbhai Chandrani, our esteemed former President, dedicated doctor, and lifelong well-wisher of the institution. His compassion, humility, and tireless service to students and the community left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him.

📖✨ English Reading Assessment at The Aga Khan Hostel, Botad ✨📖

On 14th September 2025, we were honored to welcome Anand Surani and Moez Lakhani from the Aga Khan Education Board, who conducted an English Reading Assessment for our students from Grade 4 to Grade 9.

This initiative helped evaluate reading proficiency, comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary skills, offering valuable insights into each student’s learning needs. Based on the findings, a dedicated English Reading Improvement Program will soon be introduced to strengthen language skills and boost student confidence.

A Brief History of Ruhanibagh(Garden of souls) The Ismaili Kabrastan, Botad

In earlier years, the Botad Jamat shared a common cemetery with the Sunni Muslim community near the town. With time, the need for a separate Kabrastan grew.

Through the dedicated efforts of Hasanali Rupjibhai Panjwani, the Jamat received 8,094 sq. meters of government land (Kharabo) on 29th December 1990. The first burial took place in 1992, that of his mother.

Initially, the land had only a hand pump, a small Pagi room, and a simple Namaz room without boundaries. Years later, under the guidance of community members and with the generosity of the Hamid family, Hyderabad friends, and the local Jamat, the cemetery was gradually developed.

Over a period of ten years, the site was transformed with boundary walls, an extended Namaz room, Gusal facilities, ladies’ room, chowkidar quarters, overhead tanks, internal roads, electrification, plantation, benches, and toilets.

Today, this sacred ground is known as Ruhanibagh, a name blessed by Mawlana Sultan Mahomed Shah, and stands as a serene, dignified resting place about 3 km from Botad town, on Salangpur Road.

The project is a testament to the unity, generosity, and devotion of the Jamat.

Acknowledgments

We extend sincere appreciation to Dr. Jagdish Chandrani Saheb for providing valuable historical information and photographic documentation of the site and its infrastructure, prepared in consultation with the Mukhi-Kamadia Sahebans of Karimnagar Jamatkhana and City Jamatkhana.

We also gratefully acknowledge Kabir Kapoor for recording a video of the cemetery during his visit to Botad, thereby preserving the visual memory of Ruhanibagh for present and future generations.

Conclusion

The creation and development of Ruhanibagh is a living testament to the vision, generosity, and unity of the Shia Imami Ismaili Nizari Muslim community of Botad. It is both a sacred space of remembrance and a symbol of the Jamat’s enduring legacy of service, identity, and faith.

✨ Bridging Generations, Strengthening Bonds ✨

On 24th August 2025, the Academic Director of The Aga Khan Hostel, Botad visited two distinguished institutions in Maharashtra:

1.Life Foundation Hostel, Virar – Established in 2002, this unique model combines youth empowerment with elder care through its partnership with MJD Foundation (founded 1989). It has supported over 400 students and over 300 elders, fostering intergenerational bonds, holistic education, healthcare, and personal growth. The visit also included a reunion with three Botad alumni currently thriving there.

2.Fidai Baug Hostel, Mumbai – Established in 1918 and named by Imam Sultan Mahomed Shah, the institution has empowered over 6000 students through residential care and education. The visit focused on exchanging ideas, understanding challenges, and strengthening institutional collaboration to further serve underprivileged children.

Both visits highlighted shared values of service, dignity, and education, and created pathways for future cooperation in building compassionate learning environments.

સ્થાપના વર્ષ: 1932

1932માં ઈસ્માઈલી સમાજના શૈક્ષણિક અને સામાજિક વિકાસને પ્રોત્સાહિત કરવા માટે, આપણા 48મા ઈમામ હ.હ. સર સુલતાન મહમદશાહ આગાખાન IIIના માર્ગદર્શન હેઠળ આ હોસ્ટેલની સ્થાપના થઈ. તે સમયના જુનાગઢના નવાબ મુહમ્મદ મહોબત ખાનએ સમાજની આવશ્યકતાઓને માન આપતા 8611 ગજ તથા તસુ–11 જેટલું ક્ષેત્રફળ ધરાવતી જમીન આ હેતુસર અર્પણ કરી. આ પગલું સમાજની શૈક્ષણિક જરૂરિયાતોને પૂરી કરવા માટેની એક મહત્વપૂર્ણ પહેલ સાબિત થયું.

1949: ઈસ્માઈલી સમુદાયના સભ્યો અને અન્ય દાતાઓના આર્થિક સહકારથી મુખ્ય બિલ્ડિંગનું નિર્માણ કરવામાં આવ્યું.

2014: આધુનિક શૈક્ષણિક અને રહેણાંક જરૂરિયાતોને અનુરૂપ રહે તે માટે બિલ્ડિંગનું પુનઃનિર્માણ અને સુધારણા કરવામાં આવ્યું. તેમાં માળખાકીય મજબૂતી, પ્લાસ્ટરિંગ, ફ્લોરિંગ, જરૂરી ફર્નિચર, રંગરોગાન અને સ્વચ્છતા સુવિધાઓનો સમાવેશ થયો.

1962: હોસ્ટેલ ટ્રસ્ટને ચેરીટી ઓફિસમાં સત્તાવાર રીતે નોંધણી (B-137) મળી અને કાયદેસર માન્યતા પ્રાપ્ત થઈ, જે બાદમાં 2018માં નવી નોંધણી (B-88) દ્વારા પુનઃસંયોજિત કરવામાં આવી.

યોગદાન

આ હોસ્ટેલ છેલ્લા 92 વર્ષથી (1932–2024) સતત કાર્યરત રહી છે અને તેણે મુખ્યત્વે ઈસ્માઈલી સમાજના ધોરણ 5 થી કોલેજ સ્તર સુધીના અંગ્રેજી માધ્યમના વિદ્યાર્થીઓને રહેણાંક અને શૈક્ષણિક સહાય પૂરી પાડી છે. માત્ર રહેઠાણ પૂરું પાડવાથી આગળ વધીને, આ સંસ્થા શિસ્ત, વ્યક્તિત્વ વિકાસ અને સામાજિક જવાબદારી જેવા મૂલ્યોનું સંવર્ધન પણ કરતી આવી છે.

જુનાગઢ આગાખાન હોસ્ટેલનો ઐતિહાસિક પ્રવાસ દર્શાવે છે કે કેવી રીતે સામાજિક દાન, સમુદાયના સહકાર અને નેતૃત્વના પ્રભાવથી એક શૈક્ષણિક સંસ્થા ઊભી થઈ શકે છે. આ હોસ્ટેલ માત્ર રહેઠાણ પૂરું પાડતી જગ્યા નહીં, પરંતુ પેઢીઓ સુધી વિદ્યાર્થીઓને શૈક્ષણિક અને સાંસ્કૃતિક મૂલ્યો સાથે ઘડતી એક શૈક્ષણિક સંસ્થા તરીકે વિકસી છે.

From the Archives – 1983

In April 1983, C.I.B. organized the very first Training Camp for Hostel House Superintendents at Fidai Hostel, bringing together 33 participants from 18 hostels across the region. 🌟 The 10-day program focused on building interpersonal skills, leadership, and mutual understanding among hostel leaders.

The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Shamshuddin Surani. The inaugural function was presided over by Chief Guest Mr. Dosani, with Special Guest Mr. Kasamsathy Jagatiya in attendance. Hostel Head Mr. Rayanshi outlined the objectives of the camp.

This historic moment was published in the Ismaili Magazine and is now shared with us through this treasured photo, kindly provided by Mr. Shamshuddin Surani, Hyderabad.

ઇસ્માઇલી ઇતિહાસમાં હઝરત ઇમામ સુલતાન મુહમ્મદ શાહ (અ.સ.) ના ઇમામતકાળ દરમ્યાન ભારતમાં જમાતી છાત્રાલયોની કલ્પના ઊભી થઈ. ઇમામની પ્રેરણા અને માર્ગદર્શનને મૂર્તિમંત બનાવવા માટે અનેક મહાન આત્માઓએ આ સેવા કાર્ય હાથ ધર્યું.

આ પહેલનો એક પ્રારંભિક ઉદાહરણ આજથી આશરે ૧૧૦ વર્ષ પહેલાં જોવા મળે છે, જ્યારે મહારાષ્ટ્ર રાજ્યના અહમદનગર જિલ્લાના ‘જલ્લા’ ગામના રહેવાસી અને ઇસ્માઇલી જમાતના ઉમદા સેવક વારસ ડાહ્યાભાઈ વેલજી એ આ દિશામાં ઐતિહાસિક પગલું ભર્યું.

ઈ.સ. ૧૯૧૩માં, ડાહ્યાભાઈ વેલજી એ તેમના સમયની સમાજ પરિસ્થિતિને ગંભીરતાથી નિહાળી. તેમને નજરે પડ્યું કે ઇસ્માઇલી જમાતના અનેક બાળકો ગંદી ગલીઓમાં, લક્ષ્ય વિના ભટકતા, દુઃખ અને મુશ્કેલીઓમાં જીવન જીવી રહ્યા હતા. તેમના માતા-પિતા પણ ગરીબી અને પરિસ્થિતિના ભાર હેઠળ હતા, જેના કારણે બાળકોનું વર્તમાન અંધકારમય અને ભવિષ્ય અનિશ્ચિત લાગતું હતું.

ડાહ્યાભાઈ વેલજી એ સમજ્યું કે શિક્ષણ વિના આ બાળકોનું યોગ્ય ઘડતર શક્ય નથી. ખાસ કરીને નાના નાના સેન્ટરોમાં રહેતા જમાતના બાળકોને શિક્ષણ મેળવવાની સુવિધા નહોતી. આ અસમાનતા તેમને અસહ્ય લાગી, અને તેમણે આ પરિસ્થિતિ બદલવા માટે કટિબદ્ધ થવાનું નક્કી કર્યું.

આ રીતે, ૧૯૧૩માં સૌરાષ્ટ્રના વિરુપુર નજીક પ્રથમ જમાતી અનાથાશ્રમની સ્થાપના થઈ. માનવસેવાના આ કાર્યથી પ્રેરાઈને, અનેક અન્ય ઉમદા આત્માઓએ પણ તેમના જીવનનો હિસ્સો આ સેવાકાર્ય માટે સમર્પિત કર્યો. પરિણામે, ૧૯૫૦ સુધીમાં ઘણા સેન્ટરોમાં આવા અનાથાશ્રમો સ્થાપિત થઈ ગયા, જ્યાં અનાથ અને અભ્યાસથી વંચિત બાળકોને નવી આશા અને ખુશી મળી.

પરંતુ ઈ.સ. ૧૯૫૦માં, હઝરત ઇમામ સુલતાન મુહમ્મદ શાહ (અ.સ.) એ આ સંસ્થાઓના આગેવાનોને એક મહત્વપૂર્ણ માર્ગદર્શન આપ્યું. તેમણે સ્પષ્ટ કર્યું કે “અનાથાશ્રમ” શબ્દનો ઉપયોગ ન્યાયી નથી, કારણ કે ઇસ્માઇલી જમાતના બાળકો ક્યારેય અનાથ નથી — તેમના રૂહાની પિતા હંમેશાં તેમના સાથે છે.

ઇમામે ફરમાવ્યું કે જ્યારે તેઓ પોતે સમુદાયના આધ્યાત્મિક પિતા છે, ત્યારે સમુદાયના કોઈપણ બાળકને અનાથ ગણવું યોગ્ય નથી. તેથી, “અનાથાશ્રમ” શબ્દને બદલે “છાત્રાલય” શબ્દ અપનાવવામાં આવ્યો, જે ઇસ્માઇલી બાળકોને ગૌરવ અને ઓળખની ભાવના આપે છે.

આ ફેરફાર માત્ર શબ્દપ્રયોગમાં નહીં, પરંતુ વિચારધારામાં પણ ક્રાંતિકારી સાબિત થયો — જેનાથી ઇસ્માઇલી બાળકોને પોતાનું સ્થાન, સન્માન અને ઉજ્જવળ ભવિષ્યની પ્રેરણા મળી.

Karimbhoy (Currimbhoy) Orphanage –
A Historical Overview

Established in 1894 on Altamount Road, Bombay (now Mumbai), the orphanage known as “Baug-e-Karim” was founded by Sir Fazalbhoy Currimbhoy Ebrahim. He was a prominent Gujarati Ismaili Khoja industrialist who amassed wealth through trade, textile mills (“Currimbhoy Mills”), and shipping ventures.

The orphanage was created to shelter and support Khoja Muslim orphans, inspired by Sir Currimbhoy’s desire to care for both the “body and mind” of the children. Maharaja Madhavrao Scindia gifted the land—from Altamount Road down to Pedder Road—to enable its establishment.

Legacy and Urban Transformation
Over time, the structure and its grounds were lost to urban development—replaced by modern buildings—leading to the orphanage’s physical disappearance from the cityscape.

🩺 “Health is the foundation of learning, growth, and service.”

On Sunday, 3rd August 2025 at 10:00 AM, we were privileged to host a 10-member team from the Aga Khan Health Board (AKHB) for Surendranagar-Botad at the Aga Khan Hostel, Botad. As part of a broader effort to strengthen preventive health measures among youth, the team conducted Complete Blood Count (CBC) tests for 47 students and 9 staff members.

“Routine check-ups like these are essential in identifying early signs of health concerns, especially in a residential setup where children are away from home. We are grateful to the AKHB team for their dedication and professionalism,” said the Hostel Management Committee.

This initiative reflects a growing synergy between the hostel and sister institutions, particularly the Aga Khan Health Board and Aga Khan Education Board, working hand-in-hand to create a supportive ecosystem for our students. Together, we are building a structure where health, education, and emotional well-being are prioritized with equal commitment.

The CBC test is a vital diagnostic tool that helps assess general health and detect a wide range of disorders, from infections to anemia. Early detection allows timely intervention—ensuring that students stay healthy, focused, and ready to succeed.

“Our goal is to make health awareness a part of the students’ everyday learning experience,” shared one of the visiting AKHB volunteers. “We are happy to contribute to a nurturing environment where children can thrive physically, mentally, and academically.”

We sincerely thank the Aga Khan Health Board for their proactive support and continued collaboration. This visit is a reminder that when institutions unite with shared values, we create lasting impact—not just within our hostel, but across the community.
